1969-70 Boys Tennis Team

Went 16-0 and finished third at State, the best finish in Pirate tennis history.

1969-70 Boys Tennis Team

From the Hall of Fame plaque

The 1969-70 OTHS tennis team was undefeated in dual meets, finishing 16-0, was Illinois High School Association (IHSA) District champion, NCIC champion, Rock Island Invitational runner-up, Arlington Heights Invitational runner-up, and finished 3rd in the 1970 IHSA State Tournament, which is a single competition class event. The 3rd place finish is the highest IHSA State Tournament finish of any Pirate tennis team. Notwithstanding the long period of success in the OTHS tennis program, the conference and IHSA district championships, the undefeated seasons, and the top ten finishes in the IHSA State Tournament, no Pirate tennis team until 1969-70 had finished its season going undefeated, winning both the conference and district championships, and finishing in the top 5 in the IHSA State Tournament all in the same year. The doubles team of juniors Don Harris and Brad Riley were doubles semi-finalists in the IHSA State Tournament, doubles champions of the IHSA District Tournament, and doubles champions of the Arlington Heights Invitational. The IHSA district runner-up doubles tandem of seniors Dave Chapman and Larry Whiteaker finished among the top sixteen teams of the IHSA State Tournament. The 1969-70 team represented the fifth year of a nine consecutive year run of top 10 team finishes in the IHSA State Tournament, which has totaled seventeen top 10 team finishes overall. Team members were: (Front Row L-R) John Duffin, Larry Whiteaker, Don Harris, Scott Anders; (Back Row L-R) Jim Muus, Dave Chapman, Brad Riley, John Muus; Head Coach Tom Henderson, and Assistant Coach Lyle Guenther.
